Veterinarians And Raw Feeding

For starters, I would like to disclose that I am not suggesting you shouldn't take your dog to a veterinarian or seek veterinary advice. Veterinarians go through very intensive schooling and it is important you go to them for medical necessities.

With that being said, most veterinarians who practice Western medicine are against raw feeding. This is a lot to unpack but it is primarily because they aren't given enough nutritional training to point you in the right direction. This could also be because they are taught that all bacteria and infections should be treated with pharmaceuticals. This is just not the case in most circumstances and we cannot forget that dogs are quite literally designed to handle those kinds of things. Dogs' bodies are so advanced that bacteria like salmonella rarely affects them to the point of needing medical attention.

Unfortunately, veterinarians are taught very little about canine nutrition. They know the ins and outs of your dog's medical needs, but they really should not be providing nutritional advice. Not to mention, every veterinarian that sells food is contracted with those companies. You generally don't suggest foods that won't make your business any money.

Now this isn't to say that your veterinarians are out to get you. I would, however, suggest seeking a holistic practice or someone who is educated on raw feeding assuming you are not already working with a nutritionist. Moral of the story, do your research and make the best decision for you and your dog.
